'The deep fried broccoli poem' recreated in Pinterest

Just before I started at Palmer Hargreaves, I established a brief, to ‘write a poem about broccoli’. I then created ‘The Deep Fried Broccoli’, a poem I wrote and then created using actual broccoli. I used Flickr’s arrangement options to create a gallery from a new perspective.

I recently heard that Flickr are going to be changing their picture arrangement viewings, I'm not sure to what yet, but it might destroy the layout. So I've recreated it in Pinterest, the ever growing social site (if you aren't on it yet, join now. It's invite only still, so give me a tweet and I'll send you an invite).

Behind the scenes of the Ford filming

Last week I was art directing a filming/photoshoot for an idea of mine and my creative partner Nicola, for a campaign for Ford Accident Management service, which includes a promotional video and press ads. Over the course of two days and four separate locations, with Paul Griffin (director) and Ian Winstanley (photographer/DOP), who brought our idea to life. With the help of three great actors/actress and me as an extra too.

The video is split screen, with the right hand side of the screen being quite busy, cutting to three different scenes throughout the video. With the left hand side, being one scene throughout, of a man relaxing at home. I'll share the video and press ads when they run. Paul is currently editing all the footage together which is looking great, exciting times.

Here are some behind the scenes pictures I managed to take on my iPhone.

In the coming weeks I'll be creating a little behind the scenes video, including some of these pictures with some of the photographers stills too, so keep your eyes peeled.

The next day, we were on a drive way for the third scene for the right hand side of the video. I had a little cameo role in the film, here I am with the photographer Ian.

We finished the second and last day of filming in the directors and photographers studio, where they had built this fantastic set for our living room scene (the left hand side scene of the man relaxing).

D&AD Sharp'ner: Creativity in the Middle East

A month ago a group of us from Palmer Hargreaves trekked down to Brick Lane and back in one evening, to a sharp'ner talk held by D&AD 'Creativity in the Middle East'. I've only just had the time to write up some notes that we took down, so here they are at last:

The first talk was by Stephen Stapleton, who is a Director and co-founder of Offscreen.

He talked about how the middle east art movement is trying to copy our western culture and how people are telling Saudi to invest from the button up. Not top down. He also mentioned that the middle east want creatures from our weston community.

The second talk was from Steve Lane, who spent 4 years as the Dubai Lynx Festival Director.

He spoke about the work in the middle east, and one of key things we all took away from the evening was when he talked about how the Middle East has two tones of voices. He said:

'Creativity speaking their are 2 middle easts. 2 different tones of voices.

- New Middle East - Lots of ex-pacts, more of a western tone of voice.

- Old Middle East - Very 'Arabic' tone of voice. Sat down for dinner.'

He mentioned that agencies like: Leo Burnett's, Y&R, BBDO, and JWT have been in the middle east for a while now, it's nothing new, they've just started popping up on our radar in the last couple of years. He pointed out this ad (below) was done in the middle east by Y&R Dubai, winning two golds in Cannes (2010) and many more other huge awards too. I didn't realise for one that it had come from the middle east. The first time I saw it I thought it was fantastic, clever and extremely well executed and I still do.

He mentioned if you looked at the Viral chart of that week (when the talk was) a Coke Cola piece created in Tunisia was the most viral video, which surprised a few people in the room, the middle east is really growing. He also mentioned that most of the media space out there is outdoor (a lot), TV and Print, he said they don't really get much online work yet.

The third talk was from Kerr-Newell and Andrzej Moyseowicz a creative team at Saatchi and Saatchi Israel, talking about their Blood Relations programme.

It was called the 'The impossible brief'. They sent out the brief to get Israelis and Palestinians to come closer together, they got responses from all over the world from creatives. The winning idea was to create a huge blood transfusing operation, that could help someone who had your blood type to bring to life the Blood Relations campaign which brought together Israeli and Palestinian families. It was all then put into a book and sent to political leaders all over the world, a fantastic story, worth reading up about it. They said this create quote

'Apply your creative mind beyond selling cars and deodorant.'

The last talk was from Patrick Bedeau and Yusuf El-Saadi who talked about the development of Al Jazeera's brand. They mentioned the brand had to change it's negative connotations from the past and showcased the brand and
the extremely fast turnaround of their work.

D&AD put on some fantastic talks and I've just seen the other day, they have released a list of some new president lectures, that are coming up over the next couple of months. Grayson Perry at the British Museum

I visited the Grayson Perry exhibition 'The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman' a couple of weeks ago at the British Museum. And it was one of the best exhibitions I've been to in a while, as real stand out. If you don't know of Grayson Perry, he is a British artist who won the Turner Prize back in 2003 and is well known for his ceramic vases and cross-dressing.

He had curated the exhibition and it had his work alongside some of 'The British Museums' exhibits, which he had carefully selected from the hundreds of artefacts in the museum. He must have been slaving away over the last couple of years leading up to this exhibition as he had a huge amount of work dated 2010 and 2011.

Two things he said stood out for me, which were very interesting and I thought I'd share them with you.

"Craftsmen make artefacts they think will appeal to visitors from abroad. Sometimes they get it wrong in a charming way. Creativity is often just mistakes."

He also mentioned the name of the exhibition 'The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman' could easily be the name of 'The British Museum'. So true and very interesting. One thing to keep an eye out for is his teddy bear called Alan Measles (his childhood teddy bear, which he adores and seems to be a key aspect to a lot of his work). The exhibtion could easily have been called 'Spot Alan Measles' sometimes easier to spot (you're soon find out when you go). He even has his own twitter account @Alan_Measles.

CADBURY AMBIENT IDEA

Earlier today I was in the Birmingham Bullring shopping centre, when I saw this huge ambient stunt from Cadbury. They had created this huge chocolate fountain, which had a mile long que to have a picture taken by it, and by the time I had left their were tons of people surrounding it too.

It was a lovely idea and it was extremely well executed. With a lovely give away too, a note stylised for 35 beans off any Cadbury chocolate bars, making it the price it was a long long time ago.

EAT THAT ELEPHANT DEVELOPMENT

A few months ago a saw this scrolling feature on a friends website, and I felt it would really help my website. I did a bit of research and found out how to do it.

So over my Christmas holiday in between eating, drinking and sleeping I found the feature (JQuery horizontal scoller) as an already working code and tweaked it to my requirements and I've just uploaded it to my site today.

It now means that as soon as you move your mouse to the right hand side of my work pages, it will automatically slide along to reveal more of my work.

I know its the start of December. But we start christmas briefs early in advertising.

This is a christmas card that I art directed for Mercedes-Benz DriverTraining (a course truck drivers have to take every 6 months). It was illustrated by the talented Andrew Lyons, check out some more of his lovely work: http://www.lyonsa.com/. We also worked together on a 48 sheet poster of the same illustration with some slight changes, as everyone was so happy with the christmas card. V&A Illustration Awards

I discovered this a few years ago through the Guardian's art section, and went to check it out, when I finally found it (it's a little hidden at the back of the V&A). I was amused to see some high profile illustrators such as Sara Fanelli displayed there, with many others. Anyone can enter if the work has been published or if you're a student, one bit that helps a lot is that it's free to enter. I've entered it a couple of times, with no success yet. The Illustrator who won last year was a guycalled Oliver Kugler http://www.olivierkugler.com/. His work is all hand drawn reportage and portraits. I actually found out about him whilst at University and emailed him about his illustration technique, he got back to me and I mentioned him in an essay of mine, small world.

BEHIND THE SCENES OF THE MERCEDES-BENZ PHOTOSHOOT

This week I art directed a two and a half day photoshoot for a Mercedes-Benz calendar down in Calvert Studio, in Leighton Buzzard. I've worked at the same studio nearly a year ago for another Mercedes Benz job. This time it was for a 2012 calendar for there brand new 'Actros' truck.

Here are some photos taken from behind the scenes. Shots will follow up this post in a couple of weeks after the calendar is posted out. The truck is huge (the logo on the grill is bigger than most peoples heads), and it's got loads of new features added to it, which you're soon see.

I entered this design competition called 50 for 50 by design agency Creature London. The competition is asking for creatives/designers for their take on what the new 50 pound note (which is realised on the 2nd November) would/could look like. With them choosing a winner who will win 50 pound.

A really nice idea with more entries flooding in by the day with some amusing takes on the brief. Here's mine below, called 5000 pence, and it really does have 5000 pennies if you wish to count it.

I went back to London for the weekend of the 17th September. To a yearly called 'Open House' http://www.londonopenhouse.org/, its where hundreds of buildings all over London are opened up to the public to explore, its a must.

Here are a some of my best bits.

A school in which an architect has developed a few buildings/classrooms in a West London School. The changes had gained so much respect from the kids in a tough schooling area.

There was also Richard Rogers the architects offices by the Thames in Hammersmith, they had some beautifully offices and some even better free brownies. The last one we visited was an architect who had opened his own house to the public, to promote himself. Which succeed with hundreds of people viewing it over the weekend, a fantastic self promotion idea. One to keep in mind architects.

There is an overwhelming list of what's on every year. But if you live in London there will be a building near you somewhere. Keep your eyes peeled.

I had a check back on my augmented reality t-shirt I did over a year ago now, and saw the video has racked up 36,077 views, which delighted me.

QR CODES

I'm very keen on digital. More recently I've been excited by QR codes, I know they have been around for quite a while, but now I've spotted some that are starting to get a bit more interesting.

Here is a recent favourite created by Disney.

I like this Disney one as the've integrated the QR code into the poster rather nicely. Rather than being lazy like so many other advertisers that just dump them down in the corner of the poster as an afterthought.

Here is a another totally different one from the one above from the BBC. They use footage behind the QR code for a teaser for The Fades. Sweet idea, but I'm not sure how many people will enjoy it as much as digital lovers like myself. Because it does cover up a lot of the footage. I'd like to see the numbers of how many people scan it.

CONTINENTAL TV IDENTS

Last night my first work for television was aired on ITV. It was some idents I created with a few others here at Palmer Hargreaves, sponsoring the second series of '71 Degrees North', which is running for the next eight weeks. I was down in London on Friday watching/checking the final editing with Taylor James at Envy, a Post Production House in Soho, and here is the final result from the last couple of weeks.

VAUXHALL TRADE CLUB TURNS 20

This is the final image from the Vauxhall Trade Club 20th birthday ad I art directed, that we shoot back in June. The ad was to celebrate Vauxhall Trade Clubs 20 years of existence and how far they have come over the years.

The creative chosen had two scenes. A modern day scene with a brand new Vauxhall Corsa, and the 1991 scene with a 1991 Vauxhall Nova from Vauxhall's heritage centre (which is the old version of the Corsa) which we themed and styled. It was interesting on the shoot to see the size difference between the two cars, with the Nova being quite a bit smaller.

After the photoshoot it went back to the photographers studio for some retouching work that helped transformed both of the images especially the 1991 image. It was shot and retouched by Nigel Harniman and his team.

JULY & AUGUST UPDATE

Over the last couple of months since my last post my illustration has been hanging in the Serco Headquarters for another part to the AOI exhibition 'The River Thames' competition. Fingers crossed, I will have some pictures of it hanging in their building soon to show.

It's been really busy at Palmer Hargreaves too. I've been there over a year now which has gone so fast, and I'm loving every minute of it. In July, I went on my first photoshoot, by myself (previous shoots had been with Senior Art Directors) to art direct an idea of mine showing how far a car companies trade club has come over it's 20 years of its existence. It was shot on set in a garage in Bristol with 2 cars, a brand new modern day car (we had to take the covers of the seats it was that new) and a 20 year old car from a heritage centre. Here is a picture from the shoot below:

I will soon put the ad on my website after it has ran, along with ads from my last year as I update my portfolio.

I look forward to posting next months adventures. If not sooner, as I head off to Edinburgh Fringe Festival for the first time tomorrow.

THE SKETCHBOOK PROJECT

We did this project at work called the "The Sketchbook Project" it's based in the US but we decided to get everyone in the company drawing/painting/whatever they fancied doing in 5 minutes. The results are shown on there website or you can go and see it for real on it's tour in the US.

SERCO CIVIL GOVERNMENT BUILDING

I found out today that my Illustration, that is nearing to the end of 'The River Thames' exhibition at The London Transport Museum has been chosen to be displayed in the Serco Civil Government building from June 6th till July 15th. I was only one of twelve people to be selected from the fifty illustrators on show at the LTM. I'm delighted and thank AOI for selecting me.

Last night was the private view for the Serco Prize of Illustration 2011, there where 50 illustrations a wide range of styles and sizes. It was fantastic to see my illustration hanging on the wall next to them all. Here are a few photo's from the evening.

Today at work we had some Fire Marshall Training. It was pretty enjoyable, as they taught us with the helping hand of this controllable fire, which fire extinguisher to use for the right type of fire.

LEAMINGTON REGANCY 10K

Me and a couple of guys from work ran the Regency 10k in Leamington Spa on Sunday morning, all in great times, and I'm really pleased having ran it in 50.14 minutes, though I'm still recovering. But it was definitely worth it, now I'm starting to get ready for the next one.

MY FIRST PHOTOSHOOT

I went on my first full day photo shoot with work a couple of weeks ago with the other Art Director Lyn, it was a long day shooting with Ian Winstanley but a few cups of tea we got the photographs to our retoucher Paul who is currently transforming the photographs.
